White Pine
Botanical Name
Pinus strobus
Description
Pines are evergreen conifers, or cone-bearing trees that have needlelike leaves. The White Pine is a rapidly growing tree and has grayish blue-green, soft, long needles in clusters of five. There are about 90 Pine species throughout the world, primarily in northern temperate regions. About 35 species are native to North America. The Latin name for White Pine “Pinus stobus” means coned-tree that is tapped for its resin. The White Pine is native to North Eastern United States expanding as far south as Georgia and as far west as Illinois as well as adjacent areas of Canada. It is valued for its lumber (knotty-pine), pulpwood, and resin products. It is most famous for being considered one of the favorites for a Christmas Tree. It is sacred to the Druids and one of the Seven Chieftain Trees of the Irish. The White Pine is the "tree of peace" of the Native American Iroquois Confederation.
