Oil Name:
Oregano
Botanical Name
Origanum vulgare
Description
The name Oregano comes for the Greek origanos, meaning "delight of the mountains". This is not the same herb that is used on pizza. It is the wild Oregano that is used in essentials. It is a highly aromatic member of the mint family found only in the Mediterranean. The related herbs marjoram and thyme that are sold in most North American supermarkets as Oregano actually possess little of the wild Oregano's miraculous healing properties. In 1910 W. H. Martindale documented that the essential oil of Oregano is the most powerful plant-derived antiseptic known. It is 26 times more active as an antiseptic than phenol. Even more recently, in 1977 Dr. Belaiche stated that Oregano was "the Best of the Best". It has been used in ancient times and is being redicovered today. It is one of natures natural healers.
