Camphor
Botanical Name
Cinnamonum camphora
Description
The Camphor Tree is native to China and Japan. It is an evergreen tree that grows to a great size (80+ ft) and age (100+ years) and has many branches, clusters of small white flowers and red berries. The stem is stout and thick with a rough bark and the leaves are pale green. It is adaptable to most soils and is drought and frost resistant and very hardy. The most well known Camphor Tree is the tree that survived the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb. It is said that if you touch this tree trunk energy from within is transmitted to one’s hand. Pulsations of the tree’s arteries can be felt pumping up water from its roots. The oil comes from the leaves and twigs of the oldest trees. In the 13th Century Marco Polo recorded the valued medicinal and aromatic properties of the Camphor Oil but it was being used long before then. Camphor has a strong, penetrating, fragrance and is bitter to taste and slightly cold to the touch like menthol leaves.
