The Greek word "angelos" means messenger and it was once believed that an angel revealed Angelica's special healing properties to a monk in a dream. Angelica sinensi, also known as Don Quai, is the most important Chinese tonic after Ginseng. The root was given to people to chew during World War I, to fight against influenza. In medievel times it was used by monks to treat the plague. Angelica is a large, hairy plant with ferny leaves and umbels of white flowers. The entire plant is aromatic and useful. Its healing properties were so revered in antiquity that is was called the root of the Holy Spirit. Over 30 varieties are grown around the world; 10 for Chinese Medicine.
